Presto 23-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker/Canner Review
This is my first pressure canner, and I have already used it twice. As recommended, I took the lid and gauge to the local Extension Service for testing, and it worked perfectly. The instructions booklet that accompanies the canner is pretty easy to understand, though I wish the graphics were a little larger. I thought pressure canning was something akin to rocket science, but it was really very much easier to do. And now I’m continuing a tradition that has been going on in my family for generations.

This canner works with flat burners. The bottom of the canner has a flat raised inner section that fits over the largest burner of my flat glass cooktop perfectly. Then the overhanging sides of the canner are raised about 1/2 inch, so it won’t ruin your glass cooktop. It’s a wonderful canner with various safety features built in. READ THE MANUAL and you will feel very confident using it. It does a wonderful job. I didn’t have any problems keeping the pressure to the correct level.

I bought this to can homemade tomato sauce resulting from having a huge crop of tomatoes. I was able to fit 10 pint mason jars in at a time. The canner is heavy duty, and all of the parts (pressure gauge, pressure weight, etc) worked perfectly. The first time I used it, the rubber seal really put off quite a “rubbery” smell – the second time it was less and so on. It was priced at $79.99, but after shipping ($12.50) and our local Seattle sales tax ($8.15) I was up to $100. Since it is so heavy, shipping will be high. It might be best to buy something this big at a local retailer. Good product though, and I recommend it.

My husband wanted a canner/pressure cooker but didn’t want a small one, so we purchased the Presto 23 Quart Pressure Canner. It was an awesome price and arrived relatively quickly. We have canned tuna, fruits and veggies and have made a couple of chickens in it. It only took 10 mins to cook a whole chicken! We couldn’t be happier with our new pressure canner! We were able to can 24 half pints of tuna at the same time eliminating the need to fire it up multiple times. I would definately buy this product again.

I read reviews on a lot of different canners before I ordered this one. The reason I settled on this one is because someone said it was “really big” and mentioned stacking quarts. Well, sorry folks, it’s not tall enough to stack quarts, apparently you can’t do that in any of the canners that sell for less than $300. You can stack pints and half pints, but you can do that with most of the others, too. Yes, it’s a nice canner, has a nice book with it and everything, but if I had it to do over, I would’ve bought the model that has the pressure guard that lets you know when the pressure is going too high or too low, as I generally am busy preparing the next load while one is processing and it would be nice not to have to watch it so closely. If memory serves, I believe that one was a different brand, maybe a Mirro.
